The Great Hunt - Chapter 39 : Flight From the White Tower

Ch.39 - Questions brought to you by the one and only tWoTcast that’s been in the Fandom for more years than we can count.

Symbol : The symbol is the trefoil leaf.

Chapter title : The chapter title is Flight from the White Tower. This makes me think in this chapter Liandrian, Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne and Min will leave the White Tower to Head to Toman’s Head.

Main Points of the Chapter (aka what I thought was important from the chapter)

  • *Mentioned characters :

  • Liandrian, Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne and Min are trying to leave the Tower unnoticed in disguise and they have run into an Aes Sedai, Takima.

  • Takima seems to have a good memory if she can recognize her fellow pupils at far distances.

  • Thank god Irella and Else didn’t recognize the girls.

  • 465

  • Nyneave passes as Aes Sedai to get the horses from the stable.

  • The girls reached the stables and got the guy to saddle two additional saddles he wasn’t planning on saddling because Nynaeve was passing as an Ars Sedai I’m assuming.

- “‘I told you not to tell anyone of this! Not anyone!”’ Egwene noticed pile-lanterns on the packhorse, and thought it was odd. “‘These are friends,”’ Nynaeve began, her back stiffening, but Elayne broke in on her. “‘Forgive us, Liandrin Seda. They did not tell us; we overheard. We did not mean to listen to anything we should not have, but we did overhear. And we do want to help Rand al’Thor, too. And the other boys, of course,”’ she added quickly (467).

  • Liandrian led them to a Waygate in the grove.

  • Nynaeve remembers when they used the Ways in book 1 and she probably is thinking I’ll only go through another if it means to help Rand.

  • It looks like they’re going to go into the Ways with Liandrian. I have a really bad feeling something horrible is about to happen. I also believe she’ll take them somewhere that’s not Toman’s Head in the Ways.

- “I must go last,”’ Liandrin said. “‘All of you, in. I will follow.”’ She was eying the woods now, too, as if she thought someone might be following them. “‘Quickly! Quickly”’ (469)!

  • The nature in the Ways is much different than on the outside of the Ways.

  • Liandrian basically like don’t bother me and I won’t make y’all stay in the Ways extra long.

  • Whatever Egwene does with saidar will be tainted in the Ways.

- 473, “‘You will not so much as think of the Source unless I tell you to,”’ Liandrin said sharply. “‘Why, if one such as you tried to channel in the Ways, you might well go as mad as a man. You have not the training to deal with the taint of those men who made this. If the Black Wind appears, I will deal with it.”’ She pursed her lips, studying a lump of white cheese. “‘Moiraine does not know so much as she thinks.”’ She popped the cheese into her mouth with a smile.

  • Egwene doesn’t like Liandrin and meant to say it as quietly as she could so Liandrin couldn’t hear what she said.

  • I’m starting to think if Egwene doesn’t marry Rand she might very well make him one of her Warders and will most likely be of the Green Ajah.

- “Sleep came slowly to Egwene, fitfully, and it was filled with bad dreams.
  • She did not dream of Rand, but of the man whose eyes were fire. His face was not masked this time, and it was horrible with almost healed burns. He only looked at her and laughed, but that was worse than the dreams that followed, the dreams of being lost in the Ways forever, the ones where the Black Wind was chasing her. She was grateful when the toe of Liandrin’s riding boot dug into her ribs to weaken her; she felt as if she had not slept at all” (473). This made me think Egwene was getting closer to figuring out who the man with fire for eyes was but not quite yet.

Afterthoughts

  • I’m very surprised Liandrian actually took them to where the Waygate opens to Toman’s Head. I wasn’t expecting that based on her being probably a Black. I’m also thinking she has something up her sleeve she’s not telling the girls about.

Point of View at the end of the chapter

  • This chapter is from the Point of View of Egwene.

  • At the end of this chapter Egwene probably didn’t know Liandrin was taking them to Suroth as part of an exchange to have the girls collared (resulting in just Egwene getting collared).

FLOATIES THOUGHTS

THE GREAT HUNT: CHAPTER 39: FLIGHT FROM THE WHITE TOWER

Questions:

ƒ JOE - What are your thoughts on Nynaeve using the great serpent ring claiming she is an Aes Sedai with the stableman? Side question: Is the stableman a dark friend? He seems to know Liandrin very well and helps her with weird outings with novices and an accepted and gets real worried when Nyneave mentions Liandrin being angry for holding them up. Could be just normal fear of an Aes sedai but it makes me wonder.

  • A : I thought when Nynaeve was claiming as an Aes Sedai by using the serpent ring with the stablemate was quite clever of Nynaeve (seems like something she’d definitely do, In my opinion). I thought the stableman  was indeed a Darkfriend; maybe the stableman helps Liandrin find Aes Sedai that can channel to send to Suroth in Flame.

ƒ JONO - How dumb must you be to blindly follow Liandrin, a Red ajah who has never shown any interest in you or your friends (Rand, Mat, Moiraine, etc), and say “ok, fuck it” and walk out of the Tower on a 1000 mile journey when just leaving the island is punished to an extreme degree? She even just said the Black ajah exists …

  • A: You’d probably have to be completely oblivious to what’s going on around you to decide to follow Liandrin to who knows where; let alone she’s telling them to leave the island when they really shouldn’t have (they’d all be safe if they just stayed at the White Tower).

ƒ JOE - Do you hate Elayne yet? if not how dumb does she have to get for you to start hating her? Here at tWoTcast we have a long burning hatred of the Trakands.

  • A: I in fact don’t “hate” Elayne; I don’t I will ever go to the degree of “hating” her. I might dislike her at some points but full on “hate” towards the character yet anyway.

ƒ JONO - Similarly. How fucking dumb is Elayne to go? Again, there’s a Black ajah, so maybe have caution. Second, you’re the daughter heir of Andor, one of the strongest countries in the world, but also with a tradition of women only inheriting. Your mom is 40 or so and a widow. Unlikely that she’ll get pregnant again. She rose to power when there was no remaining daughter heir, forcing a near war of succession that included Cairhien and plenty of poisonings and such (thanks Thom Merrilin!). Now this chick thinks it’s fine to go out of the Tower, risking her life? Either she returns safe, which means steep penalties for leaving and flirting with the idea of War between the tower and Andor, or she doesn’t return, making a war of succession... Good work, dumb bint.

  • A: I’d expect Elayne to stay and carry out her duties as daughter heir of Andor and not leave with Liandrin (seems like a really messed up decision on Elayne’s part). The fact that Elayne thinks it’s okay to leave the Tower sends off so many red flags something's not right (at least in my opinion anyway) and if she returns safely she’ll be punished for leaving the Tower and if she doesn’t return bad things will happen no matter what putting Elayne in a steep hole. (Done?)

JOE - Liandrin says something like, “I had made arrangements to be taken care of, had you remained you might not have lived through the night” while discussing Min and Elayne coming with them. Since you know she’s balck ajah now, what do you think her arrangements consisted of? They were going to be murdered by her “arrangements” right?

  • A: I think her “arrangements consisted of them getting murdered in front of their fellow sisters by a Black Ajah in the most public place possible with tons of bloodshed.

ƒ JONO - How weird would it be to have sex in the Ways? You could do total blackout sex, beyond something like a blindfold, if that’s what you’re into. You could do a competition to cum as fast as you can; loser fucking loses his mind to the Black Wind. Winner has an orgasm!!! You could dress up as a Trolloc, too, to make the experience more natural, hooves grating on the decaying gritty floor, floating island, thing.

  • A: Jono I don’t think it’d be weird to have sex in the ways sounds pretty romantic if you were to ask me. Of course I’d totally be into that without a doubt. This seems like the WoT version of a sexy sex kink slave dungeon and the winner would most likely deserve to cum all over Min while then having an orgasm with Min( but would the person need to precum before they can actually start cuming) to be honest and the loser is just unfortunate (hopefully the loser doesn’t have any friends or family). I think they whole dressing up as a Trolloc would be taking the experience to an all new level of pleasure and stimulation. (Jono would probably be pleased by my response on this one.)

ƒ JONO - Why is Liandrin the only one with a map of the Ways?” It doesn’t seem too difficult to just make your own map with an Ogier guide and then, boom, everyone has one.

  • A: Liandrin is probably the only one with a map of the Ways because maybe it showed on the map where she was really taking the girls and didn’t want them to see and risk them trying to use the map to get back themselves if they could.

ƒ JOE - How much vomit came out of your mouth (how upset were you) when Egwene was taken? Do you wish Liam Neason was cast as her father?

  • A: I was super upset when Egwene was taken (up to this point she was one of my favorite characters thus far). I wasn’t too bothered that he wasn’t cast to be Egwene’s father in the show.

ƒ JOE - Not really a question but Min standing her ground was Bad Ass, lets discuss how much a fan of Mine you are on scale of one to ten and if it’s not ten assume we can’t be friends.

  • A: I’d have to agree she’s worthy of a ten from my view points. She’s a very strong female role thus far and seems to be such a role model to Egwene and Nynaeve.

ƒ JOE - What do you think the court of the nine moons might be? Do the Seanchan and their culture intrigue you or do you find them interesting at all?

  • A: I believe the Court of the Nine Moons is a place you never want to go and should avoid going there at all costs if it’s run by a Seanchan. There culture definitely interests me; for example the way they treat the damane seemed very different to the cultures we’ve seen so far.

JOE - What do you think of Nyneave’s block and how do you think she’ll break it if she ever does?

  • A: I think her block is a good thing so she can’t just channel whenever she wants to and I don’t think she’ll ever break free of her block.
