The Great Hunt - Chapter 28 : A New Thread in the Pattern

 Ch.28

Symbol : The chapter symbol is the Wolf  logo. I’m pretty excited that this will for certain be a Perrin PoV chapter. The logo could be referring to Perrin perhaps not feeling afraid to use his ability to be able to talk elto wolves and use it to find Fain and the Horn of Valere. I also have a slight feeling Elyas will appear in this chapter at some point since he was the one that mentioned to Perrin he had such a gift.

Chapter title : The chapter is titled A New Thread in the Pattern.  The chapter title could be referring to the fact that Perrin’s group is following Fain and I believe in this chapter he’ll lead Perrin’s group somewhere else by making it seem obvious it’s the way he went.

Main Points of the Chapter

  • Shadow killer (what the wolves refer to him by this name; a minion of the Dark One similar to a Myrddraal) ,“‘Tell me again what the wolves said.”’ ……. “‘Someone——or something—attacked the Darkfriends in the night and killed those Trollocs we found”’ (343). it might be a man but not certain and not afraid of this creature but more in awe, the Trollocs follow this being and Fain is with them/rest of Darkfriends, it could be a creature that’s emerged from the Blight, it’ll kill a fade faster than a Trolloc (this beast seems like something you don’t want to mess with). I love that the wolves call Rand a Shadowkiller; makes me think Rand has turned into some kind of assassin.

  • Masema (first in chapter 3) , 344,347 : Thinking back to chapter three he hasn’t been all that nice to Rand; he served stew to Rand in the camps after leaving Fal Dara and he has also been a dick when Rand tried to leave Fal Dara and Masema said no because he looks pretty close to air could even be an Aiel. He strongly dislikes the Aiel and basically everyone at this point ; seems like a steady pattern with Masema so far. Is there even any way he can change later if he never gives anyone a chance?  *In this chapter no one wants to be near Masema.

  • Urien -“In story after story Aiel were as deadly and dangerous as Trollocs—some even said they were all Darkfriends—but Urien’s smile somehow did not look dangerous despite the fact that he seemed poised to leap. His eyes were blue” (344).  He’s one of the Two Spires sept of the Reyn Aiel, and is a Red Shield. What the fuck is a Red Shield???? Idk why but the term “Red Shield'' makes me think it’s a rank in a king or queen’s army for some reason.  Urin also has white eyes like Rand.

  • Mat thinks Ingtar is right about Rand being an Aiel and doesn’t think for one second he possibly could not be an Aiel based on what Ingtar said. Mat seems super fucking gulliable in this scene and doesn’t think for himself wherher Rand could be an Aiel or not. Think Mat, think. Come on.

  • Three-fold Land - , 345, 347, : to the outsiders it’s called the Waste and to Urin’s as people the land is called  the Three-fold Land.

  • Rhuidean, 345-346 : Girls are chosen to go to Rhuidean, but how and why. More information about Rhuidean, “‘I …  can tell you only what is known to all. Rhuidean lies in the lands of the Jenn Aiel, the thirteenth clan. I cannot speak of them except to name them. None may go there to save women who wish to become Wise Ones, or men who wish to be clan chiefs. No more can I say, Aes Sedai. No more”’ (346). What the fuck are they talking about.

  • Wise Ones, 345,347 : Urin mistakes Verin for a Wise One because she has the looks and looks like someone that came back from Rhuidean.  Only the Wise Ones and the clan chiefs can speak of the punishment of the sin. Wise Ones tend to bring word of great events and the events that might herald “him”.

  • “‘It is one of the signs the prophecies speak of. When the Trollocs come out of the Blight again, we will leave the Three-fold Land and take back our places of old”’ (345).

  • *346 , “‘Will you slay me now? One of the old prophecies says that if ever we fail the Aes Sedai again, they will slay us. I know your power is greater than that of the Wise Ones.”’ “

The Aiel laughed suddenly, mirthlessly. There was a wild light in his eyes.” “‘Bring your lightnings, Aes Sedai. I will dance with them.”’ “The Aiel thought he was going to die, and he was not afraid. Perrin realized his mouth was open and closed it with a snap.” “‘What I would not give,”’ Verin murmured, gazing up at Urien, “‘to have you in the White Tower. Or just willing to talk. Oh, be still, man. I won’t harm you. Unless you mean to  harm me, with your talk of dancing.”’ Triennial seemed astonished. “He looked at the  Shienarans, sitting their horses all around, as if he suspected some trick.” “‘You are not a Maiden of the Spear,”’ he said slowly. “‘How can I strike at a  woman who has not wedded the spear? It is forbidden except to save life, and then I would take wounds to avoid it”’ (346).

  • It could be its own or could be interconnected with the prophecy of Dragon and the Shadow, “‘What are these signs?”’ Urien shook his head. [1)] “‘It is said we will know them when we hear of them, as we will  know  him when we see him, for he will be marked. He will come from the west, beyond the Spine of the World, but be of our blood. He will go to Rhuidean, and lead us out of the Three-fold Land.”’ ……. [2)] “In the dirt Urien scraped a circle with his spearpoint, then drew across it a sinuous line.” “‘It is said that under this sign, he will conquer.”’ “Ingtar frowned at the symbol, no recognition on his face, but Mat muttered something coarsely under his breath, and Perrin felt his mouth go dry. The ancient symbol of Aes Sedai.” ….. [3)] “‘I cannot tell you where he is, Urien,”’ she said, “‘and I have heard of no signs or portents to guide you to him”’ (347). “‘I search for … someone. A man.”’ “His eye ran across Perrin, Mat, the Shienarans, dismissing them all. “‘He Who Comes With the Dawn. It is said there will be great signs and portents of his coming. I saw that you were from Shienar by your escort’s armor, and you had the look of a Wise One, so I thought you might have word of great events, the events that might herald him”’ (347).  When the Aes Sedai symbol was made it made me think that the Aes Sedai might have a bigger role with Rhuidean and whatever that entails.

  • The Aiel,345,347 : It seems a lot of people hate the Aiel and aren’t very likable by the general population; in particular Masema. Thanks to Masema; he makes me think they all aren’t like Masema. Masema’s actions with the soup and not letting Rand because he thought Rand looked like an Aiel was what really made me hate them; it also seems it may just be Masema that might be acting this way.

  • Aiel Wise Ones = seem  ageless and are all women and might be able to channel

  • Ingtar is trying to get information from Urin about where the Trollocs and Darkfriends went to follow where the Horn went.

  • Verin seems very curious about the Aiel women and in particular  Rhuidean and wonders how the women are chosen and might be interested in them because they might be able to channel.

  • Perrin senses Verin knows about Rand and we know she does. This shows he is good at coming up with his own conclusions about things he doesn’t know and shows he also has a reliable PoV.

Point of View at end of the chapter

  • This chapter is from Perrin’s Point of View.

  • At the end of the chapter the talk about the signs and the group continues on through Cairhein.

  • I’m convinced at some point all the arcs will meet at one location later in this book and be reunited with each other.
