The Great Hunt - Chapter 27 : The Shadow in the Night

Ch.27

  • Symbol : The chapter symbol is the Trollocs. The logo could be referring to the fact the Trollocs and possibly even Darkfriend may wreck havoc in Cairhein.

    - Trollocs will obviously be present in this chapter and maybe even Darkfriends.

  • Chapter title : The chapter is titled The Shadow in the Night. The chapter could be referring to Rand’s group having to get out of Cairhein after Trollocs and maybe Darkfriends invade in the middle of the night.

Main Points of the Chapter

  • Rand seems pressed for time and feels they don’t have time to wait for Ingtar.

  • Rand has a near death Experience with a Trolloc and freaks out because Hurin is alone.

  • Rand is thinking about using the Power to save Loial from the Trolloc but Rand for some reason can’t summon the Power and there was only taint.

  • Loial has killed his first Trolloc.

  • Rand and Loial find a group of men was what looked like no “puppet”. And they seemed very trapped with nowhere to go to stop the Trollocs, but they find the Illuminator’s manor house and they think it’ll stop Trollocs. Selene is back and she’s near the house and tells Rand and Loial to run.

  • The group managed to get into the manor and hopefully get away from the Trollocs. # About goddamn time.

  • They overhear Aludra and Tammuz talking ; I predict they’re the owners of the manor.

  • Rand just saw a firework go off……. reminds me of Emond’s Field. The firework went off and all they have is to stay quiet and out of sight. What a fucking nightmare.

  • Selene is like the people may kill you but the Trollocs surely will, and she was like you could kill them and stop the Illuminators.

  • Selene wants Rand to trust her that things can get better and Rand sends Loial and Selene to see if they can find another door.

  • They find another door; They find some fireworks and kill the Trollocs with them and Selene is gone again.

From my perspective after finishing the chapter

  • A Trolloc jumps out at Loial and Rand accompanied by Darkfriends; meanwhile another Trolloc grabs  Rand and Loial decides to fight it to save Rand’s life. Rand tried to channel to help Loial but the Power doesn’t want to come and Rand knows Fain sent the Darkfriends and Trollocs.

  • After that they are surrounded by Trollocs everywhere they go and Rand mentions they should,”watch for Darkfriends and fades”.

  • They come across the Illuminator’s chapter house and Selene appears, and Rand of course wants Selene to leave the house so she doesn’t get injured(this shows how much Rand truly cares about Selene).

  • Of course the group wants to sneak into the strangers house to get away from the Trollocs and Darkfriends ; and Selene suggests Rand to seek the Void. Loial says , “Illuminators kill the intruders” (this is exactly what they want or need). They enter and get behind a building to eavesdrop on Aludra and Tammuz ( Illuminators).

  • The Illuminators are getting ready for the firework display and Loial accidentally sets off one of the firework tubes; meanwhile Loial finds Trollocs behind the wall they’re behind.

  • Selene is still telling of Rand’s greatness and how satisfied she’d be when he gets them out of the house; Rand casually just shoots the fireworks at the Trollocs which results in an explosion and a fire.

  • After all that commotion he finds out Selene is missing yet again (not this fucking shit again).

  • The return to the inn where the innkeeper gives Rand a letter sealed with a crescent moon and stars which was left by an old woman for Rand. (I think Selene was going by this to disguise herself and not draw attention to everyone after what happened with the fireworks).

  • I think Selene is a master of disguise. I predict Selene was acting as the old woman and gave Rand the letter without realizing it.

  • I also believe she’s going away to secretly help the forsaken and Darkfriends perhaps or just helping them off and on behind the scenes.

Point of View at end of the chapter

  • This chapter is from Rand’s Point of view.

  • He is reunited with Selene and then she’s left him another fucking letter and Rand is sepreated once again with Selene. (How tragic is this for Rand and Selene? I also now ship them so fucking hard.)

  • Rand clearly wants Selene back and probably wishes she didn’t have to go so soon after Selene being reunited with Rand just to have her leave again.

Quotes

  • “‘I never … killed before, Rand.”’ Loial drew a shuddering breath. “‘It would have killed you if you hadn’t,”’ Rand told him. “Anxiously, he looked at the alleys and shuttered windows and barred doors. Where there were two Trollocs, there had to be more.” “‘I’m sorry you had to do it, Loial, but it would have killed both of us or worse.”’ “‘I know. But I cannot like it. Even a Trolloc”’ (332).

  • “Their clothes were certainly not Cairheinin. The man wore breeches as baggy as his shirt sleeves, both in a soft yellow, with embroidery on the legs of his breeches and across the chest of his shirt. The woman’s dress, worked elaborately across the breast, seemed a pale green, and her hair was done in a multitude of short braids” (335).

  • “Rand took it, and stared at the white seal. A crescent moon and stars.” “‘Who left this? When?”’ “‘An old woman, my Lord.

  • “He broke open the seal with his thumb and read.

When I think I know what you are going to do, you do something else. You are a dangerous man. Perhaps it will not be long before we are together again. Think of the Horn. Think of glory. And think of me, for you are always mine” (341).
