The Great Hunt- Chapter 24 : New Friends and Old Enemies
Ch24
Symbol Meaning : it’s the Aes Sedai symbol again. I feel like Egwene will get the spotlight in this chapter and show her new life as a Novice.
Chapter title meaning : I think New Friends and Old Enemies will be about Egwene’s life after signing her name in the book to become an Aes Sedai.
Introduced characters from Eye of the World :
Elayne(Daughter Heir) & Elaida(Red Ajah and was in the throne room with Rand) —>>were in Caemlyn after Rand falls into the palace garden after watching Logain come in to the Inner City in the cage surrounded by Aes Sedai
Else Grinwell : mentioned —>>Rand and Mat visited her fathers farm and they had to work in exchange for clothes and the barn to sleep but Mistress Grinwell suggests giving them Else’s bed
Gawyn : was there when Rand fell over the wall into the garden —>> he can tell Elaida is interested in him —>> he also leaves a warning about Elaida’s intentions towards Rand —>> as Elaida enters the garden Gawyn leaves. I wonder why, maybe because no one likes the Reds?
Galad : came out and told them Rand was Dangerous —>> Elayne made Galad go away, and Galad went and got the guards. Elayne said that she hates him because he's a tattletale, so she keeps saying that he's not her brother even though they have the same father. She doesn't like him because he's a giant rat.
Logain : the false dragon that was gentled—>> was in a cage in Caemlyn and going into the Inner City and was surrounded with Aes Sedai awaiting to be gentled
Min : was in Baerlon at the Stag and Lion Inn —>> Min is doing what she has to do for Rand, which is having a straight face and a steady eye and to lie to the Aes Sedai about Min not knowing who Rand is —>> she also wants Moiraine to come to Tar Valon so she can leave —>> Min also admits falling in love with Rand
Elaida (a Red) —>> very interested in Rand —>> she wastes no time telling Elayne who’s boss —>> no one wants a Red around —>> she asked tons of questions about Rand and Min tried to not say too much
at this point I really don’t trust Elaida because she’s wanting more information about him so she can gentle him and perhaps wanting to make the prophecy to never come true
Main Points of the Chapter
Egwene feels Very guarded and careful what she said with Elayne and Min (after she showed up) and Egwene especially didn’t want to tell Elaida too much information because she’s a Red and doesn’t want to get the secret about Rand being a male channeler and possibly put him into more danger and risk him getting gentled (just like Logain did) since we think Rand is the Dragon Reborn at this point.
Egwene, Elayne, Gawyn, Galad and Min meet each other at the White Tower.
Else Grinwell ran away from the farm (after Rand and Mat visited the farm) to become an Aes Sedai at the White Tower.
We see Logain in the halls and is told by one of the Accepted that he has to leave and says,”if you need fresh air go to the gardens”.
I wonder why Logain still frightens Elayne even though he’s been gentled and can’t channel and is of no danger that we can see anymore.
Maybe Elayne senses something else that’s off about Logain that she’s not sharing perhaps.
Min’s Auras around Elayne and Egwene and Mat, Perrin, and Rand’s from Eye of the World
The Great Hunt
- Elayne —>> the Rose Crown of Andor and she’d have to share her husband with two other women —>> Min also sees a severed hand around Elayne and has no idea what it could mean and Min foresaw Elayne to be a queen —>> I’m thinking Elayne will become a queen at some point and her husband might get around with other women and not stay loyal to Elayne, also the severed hand could be foreshadowing a tragic loss or horrible wound from battle perhaps
- Egwene —>> a white flame and Min doesn’t know what it means —>> this makes me think Egwene might be a stronger Aes Sedai than Nynaeve perhaps
Eye of the World
- Mat —>> “And the other one—a red eagle, an eye on a balance scale, a dagger with a ruby, a horn, and a laughing face.” (from Eye of the World) —>> the dagger is referring to Mat taking the dagger from Shador Logoth and possibly Mordeth since he’s a being of pure evil and probably is foreshadowing the dagger practically taking over Mat, the Horn is being foreshadowed for book 2,
- Perrin —>> “The strongest things I see about the big, curly-haired fellow are a wolf, and a broken crown, and trees flowering all around him.” (from Eye of the World) —>> this might be foreshadowing Perrin being able to talk to wolves, maybe he’ll become a king and be exiled from the throne,
- Thom —>> “The strongest images I see around the gleeman are a man —not him—juggling fire l, and the White Tower, and that doesn’t make any sense at all for a man.” (from Eye of the World) 181 —>> this makes me think Thom at some point might take orders from Ba’alzamon to pay off some debt by harming his friends at the Dark One’s bidding and wouldn’t make any sense for someone like Thom Min might be trying to say (this seems so far fetched though)
- Lan —>> “Master Andra has seven ruined towers around his head, and a babe in a cradle holding a sword and….” (from Eye of the World) —>> this makes me think Lan was the ruler of the seven towers before they fell and I think Rand is the babe depicted holding the sword like it was maybe foreshadowing that Rand would be born to become the Dragon Reborn and end Ba’alzamon once and for all
- Egwene /Moiraine—>> “‘When I look at her, I see the same as when I look at … Mistress Alys. Other things, things I don’t understand, too, but I know what that means. She won’t refuse it.”’ (from Eye of the World) ? —>> Min is talking about Egwene about not refusing to become an Aes Sedai. And she sees the same for Moiraine because they both are or will be Aes Sedai.
- The group —>>181 “Sparks swirling around you, thousands of them, and a big shadow, darker than midnight. It’s so strong, I almost wonder why everybody can’t see it. The sparks are trying to fill the shadow, and the shadow is trying to swallow the sparks.” “‘You are all tied together in something dangerous, but I can’t make any more of it.”’ (from Eye of the World) —>> no idea
- - Rand —>> “A sword that isn’t a sword, a golden crown, of laurel leaves, *a beggar's staff, you pouring water on sand, a bloody hand and a white-hot iron, three women standing over a funeral briar with you on it, black rock—“ “‘Most of all I see lightning around you, some striking at you, some coming out of you. I don’t know what any of it means, expect for one thing. You and I will meet again.”’(from Eye of the World) —>> this might be foreshadowing that Rand might sheiks the sword for the greater good, the bloody hand might be showing that Rand might lose a hand in battle perhaps, the funeral briar might be showing that Rand might possibly die to become the dragon perhaps with Nynaeve Moiraine Egwene at his grave
Elayne
You were born with the spark
Saw the glow of Saidar
Novices : Children; Accepted : young women; Aes Sedai : the Adults
40 Novices : 7 or 8 will become Accepted
Culled humans of the Power (Reds hunt the males down)
Elayne asks about Rand
Elaida Sedai searched for Rand
Whitecloaks on Dragonmount side
Else Grinwell mentions Rand and Mat
Logain
Suicidal (gentled) —>>> Accepted whisk him away
Do they always have to be gentled?
Point of View at end of chapter
Egwene : She and Elayne are determined to become Aes Sedai and they are announcing it to each other.
Min : she’s like why did Moiraine bring me to the White Tower when I probably really don’t want to be here kind of thing; she also wonders how the Red knew Moiraine took her to Tar Valon
Quotes
Min says “We three are tied together and we cannot let any man get in the way of that. Not even him.”
This quote is basically saying all the girls Rand encounters like him.
Gawyn talks about Rand and he says “You could almost think he was ta’veren.”
Gawyn is saying that he has run into a bunch of different people who have met Rand. Rand has affected all their lives. And he finds it strange.
