The Great Hunt - Chapter 23 :

 Ch23

What stands out to me as I read the chapter

Symbol Meaning: it’s the Aes Sedai symbol. Probably more Aes Sedai politics, Nynaeve getting mad at the Amyrlin and her losing her temper while Egwene is not the main focus of this chapter.

Chapter Title Meaning: The chapter is titled The Testing, it’s probably gonna be about Nynaeve’s test to become one of the accepted Aes Sedai while putting Egwene more in the background this chapter.

Symbol Meaning: it’s the Aes Sedai symbol. Probably more Aes Sedai politics, Nynaeve getting mad at the Amyrlin and her losing her temper while Egwene is not the main focus of this chapter.

- The Silver Arches Ter'angreal : bring the person that enters the arches face-to face with their greatest fears.

- It slightly reminded me of when Harry faced the Boggart and turned into a Dementor. Despite the trials can’t shapeshift.

- The Oath Rod - makes oaths binding, when you are raised to full sisterhood, you will take your vows holding this device.

- “To speak no word that is not true” (282). This quote is probably saying to speak the truth since whatever you say you will be bound to the oaths you say.

  • I find it odd Nynaeve can’t remember her past while in the first arch way  aka the Maze.

  • Theory : I believe the maze Nynaeve is in was the same maze Rand dreamed about in book 1.

  • “Everything in the past seemed vague, as if it had happened to someone else.” This quote made me think of that theory.

  • I think Rand with the maze was foreshadowing this maze experience that Nynaeve just experienced.

  • I believe there will be 3 tests. I believe the trial with Aginor was for something from the past, perhaps referencing Rand has already been here before.

  • When Nynaeve was alone with Aginor in the maze it made me think about when Rand was in a maze (perhaps the same one) with Ba’alzamon. Maybe they’re connected somehow.

  • Why is  Sheriam freaking out when Nynaeve can remember she can channel after returning from the Maze and why aren’t they supposed to be able to channel in the arches?

  • Sheriam seems to want to keep Nynaeve’s experience a secret, perhaps Nynaeve is Luke no one Sheriam has ever seen before. Also I believe Sheriam is trying to mainly protect herself so she’s not a liability for what Nynaeve was able to do.

  • Nynaeve sends a fireball at Aginor and learns she can channel.

  • The fact that we see Aginor again seemed kinda weird since he died at the Eye of the World battle in book 1. I was like WHY and HOW is he even here if he’s already dead.

  • The maze made me think of the Triwizard tournament event that took place in the maze for some reason.

  • Nynaeve facing her fears reminded me of the simulations in the Divergent series similar to what Triss had to do.

  • The second trial started with a ruined Emonds  Field that seemed to be very corrupted and Nynaeve had to leave her friend after her freaking out she’ll be in trouble if the new Wisdom found her.

  • Seeing Cenn Buie as the Mayor drove me crazy and was like WHY.

  • It seemed to be some sort of vision of the future and what could potentially happen or might have already happened after Nynaeve left Emons Field or Nynaeve fears that she might have been the reason why Emons Field fell apart.

  • Sheriam said the third is the hardest of them all. I’m like what can be worse than the second trial.

  • The third trial with Nynaeve being “married” to Lan and they apparently have three kids seemed super wack.

  • When the arch disappeared I thought she was trapped in the trial and didn’t realize she could channel to get it to reappear.

  • I’m as confused as Sheriam about why she only had two thorns in precise spots.

  • When Nynaeve says, “‘I hate all Aes Sedai”’ I believe this is Nynaeve’s breaking point equivalent to Elphaba from Wicked.

  • “‘There shouldn’t be any scarring. And how did you only get two, and both placed so precisely? If you tangle yourself in a blackthorn bush, you should be covered with scratches  and thorns .”’

  •   I wonder why the dark glow in the Amyrlin’s eyes made Nynaeve shiver (maybe it’s like a you belong to me now sorta look perhaps )

  • Nynaeve seems very sure she needs to make Moiraine pay for everything she’s done to Nynaeve. I also feel Moiraine’s actions of making Nynaeve leaving is justified at this point after seeing that they needed to leave or the world wouldn’t exist at this point.

  • Look more at the ter’angreal. Think about what it does. Think about the other one Sheriam talks about.

Synopsis from my perspective

  • The maze is basically Nynaeve relived the event at the Eye where she felt completely powerless and without the Green Man’s sacrifice she’d be dead. That’s probably why it was the first fear she faced.

  • She was only able to channel when she was angry in this case with Aginor.

  • The  second trial in Nynaeve fears what would happen in Emonds Field after she leaves.

  • The third trial with Lan shows what Nynaeve gave up with Lan;  having a family to become an Aes Sedai.

  • Could the ter’angreal project Mirror World’s to go hand in hand with Nynaeve’s fears to make them seem very real and realistic?

  • Interaction  with Shiriam as a whole in chapter

- 281-284 —>> blue Ajah, very knowledgeable in ter’angreals (knows what she’s talking about), restates things you can’t do with the one power unless it’s absolutely necessary (against Darkfriends/shadow spawn or to defend your warder or your own life), she gives Nynaeve one last chance to back out, she works well with the other sisters(during Nynaeve’s beginning of her trials). —>> My impression from this excerpt is that Sheriam is a knowledgeable person and she’s well respected in the White Tower because she’s a Blue. Also she is  also really caring regarding if the person wants to drop out any time before the trials start.

- 288-289 —>> seems glad Nynaeve made it through the first arch and thinks Nynaeve is doing well so far, she is forefront with Nynaeve and not sugar coating anything, she seems worried about Nynaeve remembering she was able to channel in the maze, she seems informative about the ter’angreal they were using , and doesn’t want Nynaeve to channel while in the arches again. —>> From this excerpt,  Sheriam seems very surprised Nynaeve finished the first “trial/arch”. She seems very truthful with Nynaeve and doesn’t hold back information. She must be confused and worried because Nynaeve remembers she channeled in the maze during the first “trial/arch”and she seems very knowledgeable about the history of the Arches ter’angreal and doesn’t want Nynaeve to channel in the second Arch because Sheriam hasn’t seen anything like Nynaeve since the Breaking of the World.

- 293-294 —>> she seems used to the reaction after Nynaeve came out of the second Arch, explains how the device uses your fears and why they use it as a test, Sheriam thinks Nynaeve should fear the third Arch and she again reminds her she doesn’t have to go in again and can quit if she wanted to —>> This excerpt shows that Sheriam isn’t shocked by Nynaeve’s reaction from the second Arch like she’s seen it many times before and she explains how the device manifests your greatest fears for the test. Sheriam warns Nynaeve that the third Arch is the worst and to back out if she wants to.

- 297-298 —>> Sheriam assures Nynaeve all people feel this way at some point, Sheriam is confused why the blackthorn caused scarring and she’s curious how she got them in such precise locations and to only have two —>> Sheriam expresses to Nynaeve happily that it’s normal to hate all Aes Sedai at first, because, “everyone does it”. She is like why did the black thorn cause scarring when it wasn’t supposed to invoke bodily harm and she has no idea how Nynaeve was able to manage only two thorns vs a whole bush and the fact she had the two thorns in precise locations in her hand also baffles Sheriam.

  • so  far I think Sheriam is a pretty cool and good person.

  • Nynaeve finishes the trials and is sealed to the White tower as Nynaeve al’Maera. The eyes might be showing that like Nynaeve belongs to them now sorta nod.

Point of View at end of the chapter

  • It’s from the Point of View of Nynaeve al’Meara.

  • At the end of the chapter Nynaeve becomes an Accepted after conquering the three trials and the Amyrlin’s glare gives off the vibe of you’re one of us now.
