The Great Hunt - Chapter 13 : From Stone to Stone
(Note: This image is being used in relation between the chapter and the chapter icon)
Symbol : it’s some sort of column with squiggly lines on it(later find out its a portal stone). I believe it represents the piece of the column Ingtar was looking at with weird rune like things.
From Stone to Stone makes me think we’ll get to learn more about the weird stone Ingtar has been looking at and perhaps what it represents if it’s from part of a structure we’ve seen so far perhaps.
Details that might catch my eye :
- “....a gray stone cylinder, every bit of three spans high and a full pace thick, covered with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of deeply incised diagrams and markings in some language he did not recognize. White stone paved the bottom of the hollow, as level as a floor, polished so smooth it almost glistened. Broad, high steps rose to the rim in concentric rings of different colored stone.” - This Stone seems very similar to the Stone Ingtar was looking at from a few chapters back and I don’t think it was a coincidence we are now seeing a portal stone. Maybe the Stone Ingtar has maybe sent them to this alternate reality.
- “Loial and Hurin still lay on either side of him[Rand]....their horses still hobbled a pace away, but everyone else was gone. Soldiers, horses, his friends, everyone and everything gone. The hollow itself had changed, too, and they were in the middle of it now, no longer on the edge.” - Why is everyone gone, maybe something to do with them being transported using the Stone to show how dangerous Padin Fain is if there’s none of Rand’s other friends to save him if he gets into trouble.
- “‘Where are we? What’s happened? Where is everybody? Where are we, Lord Rand?”’ - At this point I’d be super confused myself if I wake up not knowing where the fuck I am the next morning and I bet Rand’s group is very confused.
183- old book
- “Something about the steps caught his eye, the different colors, seven rising from blue to red. “‘ One for each Ajah,”’ he said.”- Maybe the fact it has a spot for each color might have something to do with them getting back perhaps.
- “And he remembered the room in the village, and the light he had reached for to escape. If that was the male half of True Source… No, it can’t be. But what if it is? Light, I was wondering whether to run or not, and all the time it’s right inside my head. Maybe I brought us here. “ - Rand is basically thinking should I run or not and him not being able to decide might have had a factor that triggered the alternate reality or just the fact he tried to escape the house with the One power specifically the male part of it.
- “The void shattered into a thousand razor shards, slicing his mind. When the void went , it felt like a pricked bubble, just gone, in a twinkling. Never broken like glass.” - It doesn’t normally result in this but maybe it’s because they’re in an alternate reality that it’s doing things backwards than what would normally happen.
- Rand is trying to activate the stone: “But we are all there is. Just us three.” Just me. I’m the one who has to do it. - I’m thinking Rand is the only one that can bring the group back to their normal reality that’s very different from the one they’re in right now and needs to use the One Power whether he wants to or not.
- “....What was close at hand looked all right, and what was seen straight in the distance. But whenever Rand turned his head , things that appeared distant when seen from the corner of his eye seemed to rush toward him, to be nearer when he stared straight at them.” - The fact that’s distance is super distorted makes me believe there will be more things wrong with this reality than just distance problems and some may be way more dangerous.
POV changes (if any) :
It starts out with Rand’s POV and stays his perspective. They’re in some sort of alternate reality. Rand is probably thinking I hope I don’t have to use the One power to get them all back to the normal reality and really hopes there’s another way to get them back.
Predictions for later in the book or later in the series :
- I’m predicting they’re in some sort of different dimension that has no one but Rand's group and the dark friends that took the horn and dagger and the only way back is either the Portal Stone or something different. I’m doubting there’s no way around Rand not using the one power for them to all get back after they retrieve the horn and dagger trapping the dark friends in the alternate reality.
- I’m also thinking what if either Moiraine somehow sent them to this alternate reality or when Rand was in the house with the family dinner and the flies might have been a portal and transported the group to this different reality.

Really interesting thoughts, Floatie! It may help you to reflect on what Rand was doing immediately before falling asleep beside that Portal Stone...
